For 2-3 inch deep holes, aerate your lawn a day after rain or irrigation. The soil should be soft and moist.

Note: If you have an underground sprinkler system, flag the sprinkler heads so that you can avoid hitting them during lawn aeration. You usually don't have to worry about the underground pipes though, because the Aeroller tines will penetrate up to 3 inches only; underground pipes are usually buried much deeper.
